Two people died after a high-speed motorcycle collision on April 11 in Phatthalung, raising the province’s death toll during the annual Songkran seven-day dangerous period to two.

The incident took place at 6.50pm on Phetkasem Road along the Phatthalung-Trang route, in Khok Chai Ngai subdistrict, Mueang district, Phatthalung province. A BMW S1000RR motorcycle with a Bangkok registration was found at the scene.

The rider, 36 year old Pornpipat, from Chian Yai district, Nakhon Si Thammarat, was travelling with a group of big bike enthusiasts heading towards Hat Yai district, Songkhla province. At the time of the collision, he had separated from the group and was riding alone at high speed when he struck 51 year old Somkiat, a resident of Srinagarindra district, Phatthalung, who had parked his motorcycle by the roadside and was attempting to cross the road.

Emergency services arrived to find both individuals unconscious and without a pulse. They were rushed to Phatthalung Hospital, where both were pronounced dead in the intensive care unit. Police are investigating the incident and proceeding with legal action.

Phatthalung serves as a key transit route to the southern region during the Songkran holiday, with traffic volumes rising considerably as residents travel back to their hometowns. The Phetkasem Road corridor in particular sees a sharp increase in motorcycle and big bike traffic over the period, as riders from Bangkok and central Thailand make their way south.

Authorities have noted that speeding remains one of the leading causes of road fatalities during the seven-day dangerous period. Long stretches of open highway on southern routes can encourage riders to exceed safe speeds, particularly when travelling in groups where keeping pace becomes a factor, reported KhaoSod.
