Springbok legend makes big career decision

Springbok stalwart Faf de Klerk has been plying his trade in Japan since 2022, but the 34-year-old has now opted to make a career-defining move back to South Africa for what could be his final stint before retiring.

On Sunday, the Cheetahs proudly announced the signing of De Klerk, who has committed to a two-year deal that will see him make Bloemfontein his home from June 2026.

“His arrival marks one of the most significant signings in the franchise’s history, bringing a wealth of international experience and a winning pedigree to the Free State,” the Cheetahs proclaimed in a statement.

Big decision from Springbok star

De Klerk’s international career does seem to be winding down, but it is understood he wanted to return to South Africa to be closer to family, and to give himself the best chance of once again fighting for a place in the Springbok team.

“We are beyond excited to welcome Faf to the family,” the Cheetahs’ statement continued. “His tenacity on the field and his leadership off it are exactly what we need as we continue to compete at the highest level. Faf is a player who changes the tempo of a game, and we know our supporters are eager to see him in the orange jersey.”
