The Garden Route has been ranked the number one road trip in the world, achieving an overall score of 90.6 out of 100.
A global study evaluated top driving routes based on road quality, scenery, weather, visibility and overall driving experience, with the iconic South African stretch emerging as the top performer.
The area fared better that other top well-known global travel routes like Route 66 in the USA (87.3), Pacific Coast Highway also in the USA (86.1), Amalfi Coast Road in Italy (81), and the Costa Brava Coastal Roads in Spain (76.3).
The study also assessed top routes in Australia, Canada, France, and Norway.
Wide range of experiences
At the heart of the route lies the Garden Route National Park, which spans several key sections and offers a wide range of nature-based experiences.
The Wilderness Section, situated along the N2, is known for its tranquil waterways, rich birdlife and forest cabins, with activities such as canoeing and mountain biking drawing visitors year-round.
Further along, the Knysna Section provides access to lush forests and estuarine environments. Highlights include the Thesen Island area, home to the endangered Knysna seahorse, as well as scenic forest trails in Diepwalle.
The Tsitsikamma Section offers dramatic coastal landscapes, particularly at Storms River Mouth, where visitors can explore accommodation sites, camping facilities and the well-known suspension bridge.
Internationally acclaimed
Blending forests, rivers, mountains and coastline, the Garden Route National Park remains a central feature of this internationally acclaimed journey.
Tourism authorities are encouraging both local and international travellers to explore the route, which continues to showcase South Africa’s natural beauty on the global stage.
