Woolworths’ Chuckles concern: Calls for president to ‘intervene’

Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has jokingly reacted to reports that Woolworths confectionery brand, Chuckles, could be discontinued after its supplier, Beyers Chocolates, has gone into liquidation.

However, the retailer has assured the public that there is no cause for concern.

CHUCKLES SAGA: DA LEADER ASKS PRESIDENT TO INTERVENE

On Friday, 24 April, reports emerged that Beyers Chocolate had gone into liquidation following a longstanding dispute with Woolworths.

According to reports, the chocolatier – a supplier for the confectionery brand, Chuckles – clashed with the retailer over its plans to expand, placing their exclusive agreement in jeopardy.

Rumours began circulating that this would affect the production of Chuckles, a luxury sweet treat for many South Africans.

DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis responded to a report that claimed Chuckles’ days were numbered due to the supplier.

He tweeted: “This is a matter for the urgent attention of the GNU. South Africa has been through enough. But losing Chuckles? No”.

Tagging the president, Hill-Lewis indeed: “@CyrilRamaphosa must act.”

WOOLWORTHS RESPOND TO GROWING CONCERN

News of a squabble with the supplier has left many South Africans concerned about the future of Chuckles.

However, Woolworths responded to the commentary on its X account

It tweeted: “No need to worry — Chuckles aren’t going anywhere, we promise!”.

In a statement to the public, it shared: “Woolworths cannot comment on the nature of our relations with Beyers due to confidentiality concerns.

“We can, however, share that Woolies chocolate – including Chuckles – is still the exceptional quality that our customers love and expect, and it is widely available across the country.

It added: “There are no shortages or stock issues when it comes to Woolies chocolate.”
