‘It could have been five’ – Khanye tears into Chiefs’ performance

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes Amakhosi were fortunate to avoid a heavier defeat after their loss to Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Soweto giants suffered a 2-0 defeat to Siwelele on Wednesday evening, bringing an end to their seven-match unbeaten run.

Speaking on iDiski TV, Khanye claimed the hosts could have scored three or four goals in the first half alone.

“Kaizer Chiefs did not offer much in the first half. Most of their players were off Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba, Glody Lilepo, Lebohang Maboe and Thabo Cele. After conceding twice, that’s when they only started playing.

“They had chances, but not clear-cut ones because they rushed shots and failed to take responsibility.”

The former Chiefs star added that goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was key in keeping the scoreline respectable.

“Petersen made so many saves, he did very well, otherwise it could have been five. Credit must also go to Lehlohonolo Seema,” Khanye said.

He also criticised Chiefs’ approach in their recent Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, where they settled for a draw.

“This is what I expected after they were applauded for holding Pirates. They came into the derby with three defensive midfielders and only created one real chance. Seema exposed Kaizer Chiefs tonight,” Khanye added.

Amakhosi will now turn their attention to a tough away clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

A win for them against Masandawana could see them secure third spot in the league standings should other results go their ways.
