OPINION: Trokkie’s done everything right, now the Springboks must give him a shot

A fully fit Juarno Augustus remains every bit deserving of a Springbok call-up, and the selectors will know it.

There is a cruel pattern to Juarno Augustus’s career. Every time the international door swings open, something closes it again before he can walk through. The Ulster number eight was named in an extended 54-man Springbok squad ahead of South Africa’s first four internationals of 2025. He never made it into camp, let alone onto the field. Injury hit, as it has done with maddening regularity at precisely the wrong moments.

But Saturday’s Man of the Match display against Exeter Chiefs in the Challenge Cup semi-final was Augustus at his very best. The question now is whether fortune will finally allow him to show that on a Test stage.

To be clear, Rassie Erasmus has not overlooked Augustus. The selectors identified him early, included him in the national setup and clearly rate what he brings to the table. The 54-man squad announcement last year was confirmation enough of that. Augustus did not miss out because of form or because South Africa looked elsewhere. He missed out because his body refused to cooperate at the most pivotal time possible. An arm injury against the Sharks cost him a place on the Autumn Nations Series tour. A torn ankle ligament against Connacht in December 2025 then kept him sidelined for close to three months.

That a potential Test debut has not been forgotten, however. The Springbok coaches will have watched closely enough to know exactly what Augustus offers. His carrying is physical and direct. His work at the breakdown is disciplined and productive. He does not waste energy on unnecessary confrontations away from the ball, which is precisely the kind of temperament Erasmus demands from his loose forwards. Think of what Duane Vermeulen and Kwagga Smith brought to that Bok engine room over the years. Augustus shares those qualities in a player who is currently in the form of his career.

The Challenge Cup semi-final against Exeter underlined just how good he has become. He broke the deadlock with the opening try, carried with force throughout and caused problems at the breakdown from first whistle to the minute he was subbed. Ulster coach Richie Murphy has leaned on him heavily all season, and Augustus has responded with consistent, high-quality performances in European knockout rugby. That kind of output under pressure is exactly what Erasmus looks for when building Test squads.

The position picture at number eight remains competitive. Jasper Wiese is first choice when fit and has been outstanding for the Springboks. Marco van Staden, Cameron Hanekom, Elrigh Louw and Francke Horn offer alternative options. And even Evan Roos has grown considerably this season. The queue is long and the competition is genuine. But Augustus is not simply making up the numbers at the back of that line. He is the most natural like-for-like cover for Wiese in South African rugby right now. His physicality and carrying style mirror what Wiese brings better than any other candidate currently available.

Although Augustus was not part of the Springbok alignment camps earlier this year, the door has not shut permanently. Erasmus is loyal to players he believes in, and he has shown that loyalty consistently throughout his tenure. Players who have been in the squad, contributed to the environment and demonstrated the right attitude tend to come back when fit and firing. Augustus has done all of that. He simply needs one injury-free window to finally push for a Test debut.

Two consecutive European finals, a string of Man of the Match performances and a profile that fits the Springbok system perfectly make the case without further argument. The only thing that has ever stood between Augustus and a Test cap is misfortune. He cannot control that. What he can control, he has done to near perfection.
