Museum dedicated to cannabis set to open in Cape Town

For the first time ever, a museum dedicated to cannabis is coming to South Africa.

Aptly named the African Cannabis Museum (TAC), it is set to open its doors later this year.

CANNABIS MUSEUM IN CAPE TOWN

The museum is being developed by the TAC Foundation, a non-profit initiative dedicated to preserving and presenting the cultural and historical narrative of this plant in Africa.

It will open in the fourth quarter of 2026 and be situated in Cape Town.

Details regarding its exact location have yet to be revealed.

PROVIDING EDUCATION

According to the TAC Foundation, the museum will serve as a “cultural and educational institution”, one that will shed light on the history and culture of cannabis.

In doing so, the foundation hopes it will broaden locals’ knowledge of the oft-maligned plant and soften their stance towards it.

“It is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of African plant heritage, with the focus on the cannabis plant, through curated storytelling, research and immersive visitor experiences,” they said.

In a bid to position itself as a “heritage and tourism destination”, the museum will not be selling related products.

“It is not a cannabis retail or consumption venue, and no cannabis products will be sold in the museum shop,” Katrien Oosthuizen, a representative for the TAC Foundation, told IOL. “A key objective is to broaden public understanding beyond narrow or outdated perceptions.”

CANNABIS IN SOUTH AFRICA

At present, adults in South Africa are legally allowed to use cannabis for personal consumption in private. They are also allowed to grow the plant in a private place, again for personal consumption only.

However, due to its portrayal in popular media, as well as its potential health and safety risks, many people view the plant in a largely negative light.

The legalities surrounding weed are hotly debated and tough to untangle. Nevertheless, the TAC Foundation’s museum is a big step forward in combatting misinformation, opening a dialogue and fostering understanding.

“It exists within a far wider context that includes historical, cultural, industrial and environmental dimensions,” said Oosthuizen.
