Springbok stars are worth their weight in gold.
It comes as no surprise that leading Springboks players are paid handsomely, given their sustained dominance over world rugby over the past few years.
Interestingly, influential and inspirational Bok skipper Siya Kolisi has decided to take a pay cut when he joins the Stormers. Meaning, South Africa could soon have a new highest-paid local Springbok star.
SPRINGBOKS CAPTAIN ACCEPTS PAY CUT
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is on his way to the Stormers, but coach John Dobson has gone on record to say this is not for financial gain.
“Siya was desperate to come back and made a massive financial sacrifice to be here,” John Dobson stated on Stormers TV.
“That gesture is appreciated. He said, ‘all I want to do is play for the Stormers and come back to Cape Town’,” the Stormers head coach concluded.
This speaks volumes about Kolisi’s character and his deep connection to Cape Town and his former side.
As reported on The South frican, the Springbok captain is currently the highest-paid local player.
So, should the reported pay cut prove as “substantial” as suggested, it opens the door for a new top earner in South African rugby.
BOK LOCK ENFORCER POISED TO BECOME HIGHEST-PAID LOCAL PLAYER
Springbok and Sharks lock Eben Etzebeth is currently the second highest-paid player in South Africa.
According to reports, Etzebeth earns over R18 million per season. Meanwhile, Kolisi was reportedly on more than R19.5 million annually. If Kolisi’s pay cut exceeds 10% – as widely suggested – Etzebeth is poised to become the highest-paid Springbok in the country.
Here are his reported earnings.
- Annual: R18 169 141,00
- Monthly: R1 514 095,08
- Weekly: R349 406,56
- Daily: R69 881,31
