  • The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.0%, pushing the prime lending rate to 10.50%.
  • Geopolitical conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz triggered an 11% fuel price surge, driving headline inflation up to 4.0%.
  • Despite signs of domestic economic recovery, the central bank has lowered its growth forecast due to the global oil shock and recent local flood damage.

The South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 4–2 to increase the repo rate, reversing earlier expectations of interest rate cuts for 2026.

This sudden policy tightening comes after US and Israeli attacks on Iran led to a shutdown of the vital Strait of Hormuz, causing international fuel prices to skyrocket.

The resultant 11% surge in domestic fuel costs in April pushed South Africa’s headline consumer inflation to 4.0%.

This figure hits the upper limit of the central bank’s one-percentage-point tolerance band for its newly established 3% inflation target.

Consequently, the SARB now forecasts headline inflation to average 4.4% in 2026 and 3.7% in 2027, warned forward by significant upside risks to food and transport costs.

While Governor Lesetja Kganyago noted positive domestic indicators including a favorable Moody’s outlook, robust terms of trade, and ongoing state reforms the external geopolitical shock has halted economic momentum.

Compounding these global pressures are the recent devastating floods across the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and North-West provinces.

Summing up the economic hurdles facing South African consumers and businesses, Kganyago stated:

“However, we face a painful combination of higher global uncertainty and reduced disposable income. This will hit both investment and household consumption, which have been our main growth drivers.”
