Serena Williams has confirmed her return to professional tennis, marking a comeback four years after stepping away from the sport.
The 44-year-old retired following her defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the 2022 US Open.
In a farewell essay published in Vogue in August 2022, Williams said she was “evolving away from tennis” to focus on her business ventures and family life.
According to Sky Sports, Williams is expected to compete at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London, which begins on Monday.
She has reportedly received a wild-card entry for the women’s doubles event and is set to partner with Canadian player Victoria Mboko.
Williams confirmed her return in a tongue-in-cheek Nike video shared on social media, captioned: “Good news travels fast.”
“Guess everybody heard the news,” she said.

Rumours of Williams’ return have circulated since December, when it was reported that she had quietly re-entered the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) registered drug testing pool.
At the time, she dismissed the speculation on X, writing: “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy-”
Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion. She is married to Alexis Ohanian, and the couple has two children, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. (9) and Adira River Ohanian (3).
