In a coordinated strike on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Sibanye Stillwater Protection Services apprehended five men linked to illegal mining.

The operation targeted the Cooke 4 Ezulwini mine following a tip-off regarding suspicious activity at the site.

Upon arrival, officers searched the group and discovered two AK-47 assault rifles along with 41 rounds of live ammunition.

The suspects, all Lesotho nationals ranging in age from 18 to 46, were immediately taken into custody.

The men have been charged with the possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition, alongside contravening immigration laws. They remain in detention at Bekkersdal police station pending their scheduled court appearance.

Authorities continue to urge the public to assist in the crackdown on illegal mining by reporting criminal behaviour via the SAPS CrimeStop line or the MySAPS app.
