HOW TO KEEP SAFE DURING AN OUTAGE

Outages sometimes happen when you are unprepared. Staying prepared and knowing how to protect yourself and your appliances is important.

Namola explains that if the load shedding continues for a prolonged period of time, it is important to keep the doors closed to maintain the internal temperature for some time.

Another tip is to turn off all electrical appliances, including the stove, television, fridge and other appliances, to avoid damage when the power comes back on. Also, make sure that you have a backup plan, like a power bank, to charge your phone.

Eskom explained that for residents who know about an upcoming power outage, it is vital to keep a small torch on the bedside table at all times, together with a set of new batteries in case your batteries are out of power. For food consumption, have boiled water in thermos flasks for hot drinks and a stock of essential tinned foods and snacks that do not need refrigeration.

If you prefer warm food, it is advisable to have a gas bottle and a small LP gas heating ring.
