- Diesel users will benefit from significant price cuts this month, with wholesale prices dropping by up to R3.25 per litre.
- Petrol motorists, however, will face higher costs as fuel levy relief measures are phased out.
- Government is gradually reinstating fuel taxes introduced during temporary relief measures announced earlier this year.
South African motorists using diesel will get some relief at the pumps this month, with wholesale diesel prices decreasing by between R2.62 and R3.25 per litre.
However, petrol users are in for a steep increase, with prices set to rise from midnight on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.
The mixed fuel price outlook comes as government begins phasing out the temporary fuel levy relief measures that were introduced to cushion consumers from global oil price shocks.
As a result, the price of 95 unleaded petrol will increase to R27.19 per litre at the coast and R28.06 per litre in Gauteng. The price of 93 unleaded petrol in Gauteng will rise to R27.95 per litre.
Meanwhile, the wholesale price of diesel will decrease to R27.05 per litre at the coast and R27.92 inland. The price of 50ppm diesel will fall to R27.88 at the coast and R28.75 inland.
Month-end unaudited data released by the Central Energy Fund had initially painted a more positive picture, suggesting that 95 unleaded petrol could have decreased by 46 cents per litre, while diesel showed over-recoveries of between R4.93 and R5.56 per litre.
Meanwhile, the National Treasury’s temporary fuel tax relief measures, announced in April, are being phased out from June. This will see R1.50 reintroduced to the petrol fuel levy and R1.96 added back to the diesel levy.
A further R1.50 increase will be added in July as the fuel tax structure returns to normal.
The global fuel structure was affected following the US strikes on Iran, which caused international oil prices to spike, with the latter placing a chokehold on the critical Strait of Hormuz oil route.
However, hopes of an imminent peace deal have seen prices subside slightly during May.
