- State power utility Eskom has launched “Eskom Green”, a dedicated renewable energy platform targeting the high-emission mining and manufacturing sectors.
- The new entity will utilise Eskom’s existing land and grid infrastructure to develop utility-scale solar, wind, and storage projects via long-term power purchase agreements.
- To combat slow national renewable rollout, the platform aims to deliver an initial 2GW of projects, scaling up to 32GW of clean capacity by 2040.
South Africa’s primary power utility, Eskom, historically the nation’s largest carbon emitter due to its ageing coal fleet, has launched a new green energy proposition aimed at accelerating the country’s transition to renewable power.
Named “Eskom Green”, the platform will initially operate as an internal division before transitioning into a wholly-owned subsidiary, subject to regulatory approvals.
The initiative is designed to support major industrial consumers, specifically targeting the mining and manufacturing sectors, which rely heavily on cleaner electricity supplies to eliminate up to 75% of their scope 1 and 2 emissions.
The establishment of the entity follows an extensive international benchmarking exercise across 20 global utilities. Eskom Green plans to address the country’s sluggish renewable energy rollout by leveraging Eskom’s existing power station sites, available land, and established transmission infrastructure.
Company leadership emphasised that the platform is intended to complement, rather than replace, independent power producers. Highlighting the strategic vision behind the launch, Eskom Chair Mteto Nyati stated:
“We see Eskom Green as a direct response to those needs. Our role is to help derisk the transition and accelerate delivery where it matters most.”
Kaya Biz spoke to Group Executive for Renewables, Rivoningo Mnisi, outlines what this means for investors, developers, and South Africa’s energy future.
