The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a 38-year-old man in Benoni for allegedly operating a sophisticated “fake document factory.”

The investigation was launched after fraudulent electricity receipts were discovered at the Chief Albert Luthuli informal settlement in Cloverdene, leading officers to trace the source to a local business.

The trail led police to an internet café on Bedford Avenue, where the suspect reportedly confessed to selling forged electricity vouchers to the public for R250 each.

Upon searching the premises, officers uncovered a vast array of counterfeit documents, including smart ID cards, work permits, traffic registers, and foreign driving licences, along with the hardware used to manufacture them.

The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to appear before the Benoni Magistrate’s Court shortly.

He faces multiple charges related to fraud and violations of the Immigration Act as the EMPD continues its investigation into the wider distribution network of these illicit documents.
