- Officials warn that a zero-tolerance approach will be enforced, with offenders quickly tracked down using social media.
Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal are searching for a man captured driving recklessly in a viral video circulating on official social media platforms.
The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) has called on the driver and his associates to hand themselves over to authorities.
The search comes as officials intensify efforts to clamp down on dangerous and illegal driving, following a decline in Easter road fatalities.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport confirmed it has launched an investigation to trace those involved and has urged members of the public to provide any information that could assist.
MEC Siboniso Duma said the crackdown forms part of the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation, which targets irresponsible drivers who pose a danger to others on the road.
“Weekends should be a time for families to bond, not for funerals caused by reckless driving,” said Duma. “We are also targeting illegal drag racing involving vehicles with modified engines.”
He added that such activities have turned some areas into high-risk zones, leaving residents and road users living in fear.
Duma said authorities, working with Operation Shanela, will adopt a zero-tolerance approach and use social media to identify and swiftly arrest offenders.
