- SAPS says it is too early to classify the recent explosions at two Woolworths stores as acts of terrorism.
- A specialised forensic task team and Crime Intelligence experts have been deployed to investigate the incidents.
- Police say all possible motives are being explored as investigations continue.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) says the recent explosions at two Woolworths stores should not be classified as acts of terrorism at this stage.
Police say it is too early to draw such conclusions, as investigations are still underway.
This comes after part of a Woolworths store in Menlyn, Pretoria, was damaged in an explosion earlier this week. A second explosion was later reported at another Woolworths store in the Free State.
In response, Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimapane has deployed a National Forensic Task Team, together with Crime Intelligence experts, to investigate both incidents.
Investigations remain at an early stage, with authorities exploring all possible motives.
“At this stage, it would be premature to classify the incidents as acts of terrorism. SAPS remains alert and will continue to assess the situation as investigations unfold,” said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe added that any additional security measures, including monitoring around affected or related premises, will be guided by ongoing investigations and threat assessments.
