The Queen Mother throws her jade hairpin, which turns into the magical stabilizing needle to calm the waters, and orders the fairy Yu Yao to guard it. Lu Sinian, a celestial official, is sent to suppress Xuan Qing, the descendant of the monster, and falls in love with Yu Yao.
Xuan Qing’s power surges, and he gravely injures Yu Yao. To save her, Lu Sinian steals a heavenly snow lotus from the Tianshan Mountains. This breaks the laws of heaven, and he is cursed to endure ninety-nine lives of reincarnation. In his ninety-ninth life, Lu Sinian is a university student preparing for graduate exams. Xuan Qing lures him to Tianchi, intending to absorb the love spirit of him and Yu Yao in order to pull out the stabilizing needle.
At the critical moment, Lu Sinian regains his memories and takes a fatal blow meant for Yu Yao. Xuan Qing reveals the truth—that he was used by his ancestor Xuan Heng—and takes his own life in atonement for the misguided love. Carrying Lu Sinian, Yu Yao climbs the Heavenly Ladder to seek the Queen Mother’s help. The love spirit fairies open the Gate of Rebirth for them, and the two are reunited at Tianchi. Their thousand-year love finally reaches its happy end.
