South African vocalist J’Something, born Joao da Fonseca, has released a powerful new rendition of “Asimbonanga”, a song originally performed by the late Johnny Clegg.
The track will feature on the upcoming album Scatterlings, a collaborative project led by Clegg’s son, Jesse Clegg, and acclaimed singer-songwriter Msaki.
The album will see several artists come together to reimagine Clegg’s iconic body of work. These include Grammy Award-winning Zakes Bantwini, Sun-El Musician, and Simmy, among others.
Originally written and performed by Johnny Clegg and his band Savuka, “Asimbonanga” became a defining anthem of the anti-apartheid movement. The song called for the release and recognition of Nelson Mandela at a time when his name was banned in South Africa.
According to Virgin Music Group South Africa, J’Something’s version offers a deeply personal and modern interpretation of the original.
“This new version carries that spirit forward with renewed energy and purpose, connecting past and present through a song that continues to resonate across generations,” the label said.
Speaking about the release, J’Something reflected on the influence Johnny Clegg had on his life and music.
“Growing up in South Africa, Johnny Clegg wasn’t just a musician; he was a voice of truth, unity and courage. I had the privilege of meeting him a few times and feel absolutely blessed to be releasing this as a single.
“His music shaped how so many of us understood our identity and our history. To be able to reinterpret ‘Asimbonanga’ is something I don’t take lightly. It’s an honour beyond words to celebrate a man whose work meant so much to me, and to be part of a project that carries his legacy forward for a new generation,” he said.
