Rassie Erasmus to receive highest national honour

Rassie Erasmus is set to receive another very special accolade, recognising his inspirational leadership that propelled South Africa to repeated Rugby World Cup victories and advanced social cohesion across the nation.

In an announcement made by the Chancellor of the National Orders, Phindile Baleni, it was confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially bestow the award on Erasmus during a ceremony on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

The National Orders recognise contributions made by individuals towards building a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa.

Another special moment for Rassie Erasmus

While the award recognises Erasmus’s rugby acumen in guiding the Springboks to back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023, its significance runs deeper.

Erasmus is also being honoured for redefining the Springbok brand and culture, his role in fostering social cohesion through rugby and maintain sporting excellence.

“National Orders are the highest awards that our country bestows on citizens who have made a significant impact on improving the lives of South Africans,” stated Baleni.

The timing of this honour coincides with a period of sustained dominance for South African rugby.

This Order can be awarded in three categories:

  • Category 1 = Gold
  • Category 2 = Silver
  • Category 3 = Bronze.
