RIP | Father of Proteas’ star Wiaan Mulder dies

The Lions Cricket Union and DP World Lions have expressed their deepest condolences to Wiaan Mulder following the passing of his father, Pieter Mulder.

In a statement, the union said its thoughts are with Mulder and his family during this profoundly difficult time.

Pieter Mulder was remembered as a proud and devoted father who passionately supported his son’s cricket career and was a loyal supporter of the Lions at every match.

The Lions Cricket Union emphasized that they stand beside Wiaan not only as a key member of their cricketing family, but also as someone they care for deeply beyond the game.

Official message

“During this profoundly difficult time, our thoughts are with Wiaan, his loved ones, and all who were touched by his father’s life.

“Pieter was a proud father and supported Wiaan so much, loved the Lions and proudly supported every match.”

The cricketing community rallied around Mulder, offering support and sympathy as he and his family navigate their loss.

Test career

Wiaan Mulder, 28, made his Test debut for the Proteas against Sri Lanka at St George’s Park in Gqeberha in February 2019.

He stunned the cricketing world when he hit 367 not out against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in July 2025.

That innings remains the fifth-highest ever score by a Test batsman – and the highest by a South African.

As captain of the Proteas in that match, Mulder controversially – in some circles – elected to declare just 33 runs shy of the world record of 400 not out set by West Indian legend Brian Lara.

In Mulder’s six innings’ since that South African record knock, his highest score has been 35 not out.
