- A Chief Whip linked to a major South African political party has been arrested over allegations of fraud.
- The suspect allegedly recruited party researchers and demanded large portions of their salaries under the guise of covering legal fees.
- The accused is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
A Chief Whip of a prominent South African political party was arrested on Thursday, 28 May 2026, over allegations of fraud.
Although authorities have not officially confirmed the identity of the suspect ahead of the court appearance, it is believed to be Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party).
It is alleged that between August 2024 and December 2024, the suspect recruited four individuals into the party as researchers.
According to allegations, the individuals were later instructed to pay between 50% and 60% of their salaries under the pretext that the money was needed to cover the legal costs of the party’s president.
Authorities allege that the victims collectively lost approximately R233,317.99.
The suspect is expected to make a first appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
