  • Two Department of Home Affairs officials have been arrested as part of a sweeping anti-corruption drive that has already seen 63 dismissals.
  • The arrests involved a fraudulent death registration in Pinetown and the irregular issuance of Smart IDs to foreign nationals in Secunda.
  • Minister Leon Schreiber warned that the “accelerating” pace of arrests and convictions signals zero tolerance for departmental maladministration.

The Department of Home Affairs has extended its rigorous internal crackdown, resulting in the recent arrests of two more officials implicated in illicit activities.

Since the launch of this anti-corruption campaign in July 2024, the department has dismissed dozens of staff members and secured numerous arrests in a bid to restore institutional integrity.

On 29 April 2026, an official at the Pinetown branch was apprehended following an investigation into a fraudulent death registration.

During a sting operation conducted by Counter Corruption and Security Services and Provincial Crime Intelligence, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with R3,000 to avoid detention.

In a concurrent operation in Secunda, the Hawks and departmental investigators arrested another official alongside two members of the public.

This trio is accused of processing Smart ID cards for foreign nationals who did not qualify for them. The suspects now face charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.

Minister Leon Schreiber noted that the momentum of these disciplinary actions is quickening, with arrests or convictions now becoming a weekly occurrence. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to rooting out every individual involved in malpractice, stating that the authorities will not rest until the department is entirely cleared of corruption.
