- Three South African Police Service (SAPS) constables died following a shooting at a residence in Kariega early Thursday morning.
- A male officer allegedly forced entry into his former girlfriend’s home, leading to a fatal confrontation with her and another male colleague.
- Authorities have seized a state-issued firearm and launched both internal and independent investigations into the incident.
A tragic shooting incident in Kariega, Eastern Cape, has claimed the lives of three South African Police Service (SAPS) constables. In the early hours of Thursday, at approximately 00:45, police attended a residence on Rudman Street following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered three officers with multiple gunshot wounds.
Two of the constables were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third succumbed to their injuries shortly after being transported to Cuyler Hospital.
Preliminary findings suggest the tragedy was sparked by a domestic dispute; a male officer reportedly forced his way into the home of a female colleague believed to be his former partner while she was with another male officer.
Investigators have recovered a state-issued firearm and ten rounds of live ammunition from the premises. These items will undergo ballistic testing as part of the formal inquiry. Alongside a SAPS internal disciplinary docket, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched a parallel investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of service weapons.
Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, offered his condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased, describing the event as a “devastating loss.”
To assist those affected by the tragedy, SAPS has deployed trauma debriefing and counselling services for both staff and the bereaved families.
