South Africa’s criminal justice system has long faced allegations of infiltration by corrupt officials, including police officers sworn to protect the public.

While concerns around corruption within law enforcement have persisted for years, many of the allegations involving senior police officials gained renewed attention in July 2025 during a briefing by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi accused several officials, including suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, of corruption and of protecting criminal syndicates.

This infographic provides an overview of some of the high-ranking police officials arrested in recent months and the charges they face.

Meanwhile, 12 senior police officials are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, in connection with the alleged irregular awarding of a R360 million tender to Medicare 24.

The group faces charges of corruption, fraud and alleged contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

Among those charged is Brigadier Rachel Matjeng, who previously told the Madlanga Commission that she had an on-and-off relationship with Matlala.

The accused officials are currently out on bail.
